The Bad Backs are New Hampshire based Stan Chew, Chris Pimentel and Tim Sweeney.
Stan Chew and Chris Pimentel are best known for anchoring the rhythm and vocal section of the legendary Lunch At The Dump.
Both honed their Americana and acoustic chops within Lunch At The Dump's penchant for inventiveness and masterful musicianship.
Their stagecraft was formed through twice performing in Broadway plays, opening for luminaries such as JD Crowe and The New South, Vassar Clements, Lester Flatt, Peter Rowan, Buck White and the Downhome Folks as well as Grammy winners, The Whites. They fronted other notable New England bands such as By Hook Or By Crook, The Drones and The Boys.
Tim Sweeny was the drummer for The Billy West band...yes, that Billy West of Ren and Stimpy fame along with Bugs Bunny Space Jam and other notables. Tim has enjoyed a decades-long reputation for skills and taste...Not an easy thing to pull off in percussion.
"The Bad Backs ‘ founding members, Stan Chew, Tim Sweeny and Chris Pimentel's musical success is based on their quality and longevity. The musicianship, knowledge, sound, audience skills, energy, dependability & professionalism equate to success. They have it.
They have mastered Bluegrass and Swing with Lunch at The Dump , rock / R &B with The Drones and By Hook or By Crook… and now, all original Alt-Folk and Americana with
The Bad Backs."
- Richard Smith, founder of CREA, Cuzin Richard Entertainment and Modern Records
When they formed, the idea was to yield to writing and songcraft instead of covering others music.
Their writing, arranging and recording is within a specific Alt-Folk, Americana style. The emphasis is on vocals accompanied by a lush, clean sound that is melodic, authentic yet highly original. Lyrically, they keep it simple, paint pictures or tell meaningful stories that folks can relate to.
After a first listen, you'll remember the songs.
Their bet is, If you like The Cactus Blossoms, NRBQ (ala Big Al and Joey era), Ry Cooder, The Mavericks, Brian Wilson, Los Lobos, Chris Isaak, The Louvin Bros and The Everly Bros...then you'll like The Bad Backs.
"Easy Listening music...like The Beatles are Easy Listening music"
- Ralph Fatello, leader of notable Boston band VINNY and author of Ralphspic.com
The process of writing music for The Bad Backs includes recording and working with Nashville based producer Charlie Chamberlain.
Stan Chew and Chris Pimentel independently write, then bring the songs into rehearsal. It's collaborative starting from that point on. Tim Sweeny finding the groove and collectively refining the song.
The songs are all recorded live without beat tracks at Go To Your Room Records. The effort is to capture the essence of the song quickly. All is handed off to the producer Charlie Chamberlain to add his input and musical engineering artistry.
The result is best described as a dynamic, full, lush sound. The vocals are true, authentic.
Given a 1955 Martin D-18, Gretsch Country Gentleman, Dan Electro baritone, customized Telecaster and Fender Precision Bass all played through a variety of boutique amps and a scaled down cocktail kit for drums...if you love rich sounding records, you get this.
"Oh man, these records are great! Love it brother. Well done Stan, Chris and Tim!"
-Clay Blaker, Nashville, Texas and Panama based Songwriter for hit makers such as George Straight, Barbara Streisand, Johnny Mathis, The Derailers and many many others. He is founder of Clay Blaker and The Texas Honky Tonk Band
When The Bad Backs formed, they knew what sound they were going for, both in their songs and in their records.
With a love of the southwestern music scene and sound, The Bad Backs set out to capture that SW essence with respect and authenticity while being true to their New England-ness.
Latino Folk, Southwestern Ballad, SW Country Rock and RnB, all done in The Bad Backs style.
This sophomore record set a departure point towards a richer sound and a more expansive approach to their writing and playing.
The genres opened wide in Back In Time ranging from Rockabilly, RnB, and American Folk/Roots Rock.
By now, producer, Charlie Chamberlain became musically invested in The Bad Backs sound and the results, dead on the mark.
The first record for Go To Your Room records, L5/S1 was setting the bar. The Bad Backs had played together in various forms for their entire careers and had the playing down, but in a new band with an original format...they were finding their way.
From song writing to arranging and working with a new producer, Charlie Chamberlain, this is the initial result. L5/S1 set the stage.
